In Pursuit of the Longevity Dividend
In Pursuit of the Longevity Dividend
In March of 2005 my colleagues (Robert N. Butler, Daniel Perry, and Rich Miller) and I published a manuscript in The Scientist in which we called on Congress to invest in what we referred to as the Longevity Dividend -- the social, economic, and health benefits that would accrue from successful efforts to slow aging in people. We suggest that the current effort to combat disease and extend healthy life would be greatly enhanced and accelerated if we attacked the underlying biological processes that give rise to them all -- aging. Our recommendation is nothing short of a paradigm shift in the way in which we think about health promotion and disease prevention. In September of 2005 Daniel Perry from the Alliance for Aging Research arranged for a congressional briefing on the Longevity Dividend. Several scientists then met with Senator Tom Harkin who requested that we provide language to include in the 2008 appropriations bill -- that effort succeeded. The video on the left is my talk at the Alliance’s meeting in D.C. -- the video on the right shows all of the presentations.
